And "Purple Modus" crosses between disco and tribal house, full of hand percussion and a walking bassline, finished off with a synth that whirrs and purrs in the background. "Taurindo Shuffle," with its retro vocal samples and irreverent organ riff, sounds like "Voodoo Ray" on a tropical getaway with "Gypsy Woman," with a limber rhythm section that holds everything together just so. "Sunswell" might be the masterpiece here, but the other two tracks hold their own. (Genius Of Time have been experts at this for over a decade.) It's hard to describe what makes a track like "Sunswell" so perfect-it's just the effortless glide, the way the melodies subtly bend and twirl, the feeling that it could go on forever and never get boring. The beginning is a swell of synth that sounds like pure comfort, eventually sprouting a bobbing breakbeat and a gentle giant of a bassline that carefully pushes things along. (It doesn't matter how jaded you are.) The duo have carefully kept up with trends, touching on tech house and, this time, breakbeats, but the core elements are alays there: a sense of unhurried pacing, careful development and sweet synth melodies that hang in the air like pollen drifting on the wind.Īll of these things come together on the astounding "Sunswell," the title track from their new record for Turkish label Oath. It's not that the two aren't talented on their own, but combined, they make some of the most soulful and blissed-out house music to ever come out of Scandinavia, the kind that makes you close your eyes and sway along, letting the sounds wash over you.
